How to Brush with Braces

Congratulations on starting your journey to your beautiful smile! Getting braces can be an exciting time. But we also know that sometimes new patients can be a little overwhelmed getting used to their new appliance. Some of your toothbrushing habits have to be adjusted a little bit to make sure that you take care of your appliance properly. Brackets and wires make brushing a little different, but don’t worry. Soon you will realize that brushing with braces is easy to learn and you’ll have the hang of it in no time.

Rules to Remember

Brushing with Braces Rule #1 – Choosing the right brush.

    • First, get a toothbrush with soft bristles. You can use an electric or regular toothbrush. Make sure to only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Brushing with Braces Rule #2 – Master the motion.

    • When you start brushing, begin at an angle on the top and the bottom of the brackets and wires. Use a circular motion and try your best to touch every surface of both your braces and teeth. Don’t forget to gently brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Brushing with Braces Rule #3 – Get out any food

    • It’s common to get food stuck in your braces, but don’t try to dig it out with just anything lying around. Use a proxy brush or flosser to get out any food and avoid damaging your braces.

Brushing with Braces Rule #4 – Three is the magic number.

    • Lastly, make sure to brush your teeth at least three times a day to ensure your teeth are properly cleaned. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends brushing for two minutes after every meal or snack. And if you’re in a place where you can’t brush, be sure to rinse your mouth.

Getting the Hang of Brushing with Braces

Keeping your teeth properly cleaned is even more important when you’re wearing braces because food particles can hide in the nooks and crannies around your brackets. The good news is that it’s easy to get used to your new brushing routine. Just follow the rules above and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!
