How Does Invisalign Work?

Gone are the days where metal braces are the only orthodontic option to straighten your teeth. Now there are several options including invisible aligners. Invisalign is a great option for teens and adults who want to work on their perfect smile in a more discrete way.

So, what exactly is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of clear aligner trays that gently move your teeth into their ideal orthodontic position over a course of time. “Invisalign” is the brand name for a particular product and has become the word that most people are familiar with when they think about clear aligners. (Just like some people call all soft drinks “Coke” regardless of what brand is actually is.) In addition to the brand Invisalign, we also offer additional aligner options that will give you the same beautiful results! Your orthodontist will be able to help you choose which is best for your treatment.

So, how does it work?

Scans of your teeth will be made before you begin treatment, and custom-made trays – or aligners – will be made especially for you. The aligners are made from flexible, clear plastic. Not only are they more comfortable, but they’re also practically invisible. Most people probably won’t even be able to tell that you’re wearing them!

Rather than needing to come into the office to have your braces tightened, this process gradually moves your teeth by applying gentle pressure. You will receive several numbered aligners at your appointment. Your orthodontist will go over with you when to change your trays. This treatment plan means fewer office visits, with the same results.

So, who is a good candidate?

You or your child will need to be seen before we can say for sure that someone is a good candidate for Invisalign or aligners. But in most cases, this treatment plan works best for teens and adults. This is for two reasons. Number one, Invisalign and aligners work best when the patient’s jawbones have stopped growing. And number two, older kids and adults are generally more mature and responsible when it comes to wearing, changing and taking care of their aligners. Successful treatment is completely dependent upon following the recommendations of your orthodontist.

How do I get started?

Whether you’re concerned about teeth crowding, crooked teeth, an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, moving your teeth into their ideal position with aligner trays may be the right course of action. We’re happy to go over all of the details and help you make the right decision for yourself or your child.
